Washington DC is a popular destination for pet transport, whether you're visiting the nation's capital or relocating to the DMV. Before choosing a pet transport company, take the following steps to ensure the safety of your pet during travel. These actions also make you compliant with local pet transportation laws.
First, secure a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from a certified veterinarian in your area. This document should be issued within 10 days before travel.
Next, obtain a rabies vaccination certificate, signed and dated no more than 30 days before transport.
Some DC pet transport firms provide pet carriers; if not, you'll need to purchase one.
The carrier must: allow the pet to stand, sit and turn around; provide adequate ventilation; have a solid bottom; secure closure; and, if for puppies or kittens, padded walls.
If you’re flying, the carrier must meet airline requirements, which vary by carrier.
